The YMCA is a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose and each other through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body.
Our Pillars of Impact
At the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, we strengthen community through three core pillars—Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility—ensuring everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

Youth Development
The YMCA nurtures the potential of every child and teen by supporting their unique journey.
10,380+ children served through youth programs - including childcare and summer camp.

Healthy Living
At the Y, we believe health and fitness mean taking care of the whole you, and we know that even small changes can make a big difference.
87,743 members found a supportive community at the YMCA.

Social Responsibility
The YMCA believes our communities are strongest when everyone is included and has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
$2.6 Million was awarded in Financial Assistance to help families access childcare, summer camp and YMCA services.
Building a Diverse and Inclusive Community

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine is an inclusive organization open to all and believes that, in a diverse world, we are stronger when we are inclusive, when our doors are open to all and when everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
Our History
The YMCA movement began in London in 1844, with the first U.S. YMCA opening in Boston in 1851. Here in Chester County, the Coatesville YMCA opened its doors on February 27, 1894—marking more than 130 years of strengthening our community.
From the very beginning, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) has thrived thanks to the generosity and trust of our neighbors. Today, we remain a charitable, not-for-profit organization, qualifying under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Tax Code, and continue to enjoy an extraordinarily strong reputation built on service and impact.
“We’re incredibly proud of the impact we have on our community,” says Bertram L. Lawson II, President and CEO of YGBW. Living true to that statement, we never turn away anyone due to financial need. Through our Financial Assistance program, we provide need-based scholarships that ensure everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive—no matter their circumstances.
