Bertram L. Lawson II is a distinguished leader in nonprofit management, recognized for his extensive contributions to membership acquisition, talent development, community development, youth programs, and diversity initiatives. In July of 2023, he assumed the role of President and Chief Executive Officer at the YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW), marking a historic milestone as the organization’s first African American to lead this multimillion-dollar operation.
Before joining YGBW, Lawson served as President and CEO of the YMCA of Central New York, beginning in February 2021. In this capacity, he oversaw the organization’s strategic direction and operations, focusing on expanding community outreach and enhancing program offerings.
Lawson’s career with the YMCA began in 1998 as a camp counselor at the Greater Philadelphia YMCA. Over the years, he advanced through various leadership roles, including Senior Vice President of Operations at the Y in Central Maryland, where he managed multiple health and wellness centers, youth development programs, and community schools. His commitment to education led him to the position of Chief Operating Officer for Mastery Charter Schools Network a $250M operation, overseeing non-instructional operations across (24) campuses in Pennsylvania and New Jersey educating 15,000 students.
An alumnus of Lincoln University, he is pursuing an MBA from Wilmington University. He holds multiple certifications from YMCA of the USA and is a graduate of the Multicultural Executive Development Institute and C-Suite Next Level Coaching Programs. Beyond his professional endeavors, Lawson is actively involved in community service, serving on various boards and commissions, including Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Early Learning Investment Commission (appointed by Governor Josh Shapiro), Lincoln University (PA) Board of Trustees, Community Rec Magazine-National Advisory Board, and YMCA of the USA-National Membership Standards Advisory Committee. Bertram is a Past National Chair for YMCA of the USA’s African American Employee Resource Network (AARN). He has also contributed to national YMCA committees focused on membership, board development/governance, DEI and talent development.
Lawson’s leadership philosophy emphasizes innovation, collaboration, and representation. At YGBW, he is dedicated to expanding the organization’s impact through strategic partnerships, philanthropy, and a steadfast commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Under his guidance, YGBW aims to deepen its community engagement and ensure that its programs reflect the diverse voices and needs of the communities it serves.
In addition to his professional achievements, he is a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., initiated via Beta Chapter in Spring 1996.
