Caring for Yourself while Caring for a Loved One

If you are the primary caregiver for a loved one with a serious illness, the holidays can add a layer of stress. As impossible as it seems, we encourage you to take a break for yourself.

Whether you able to do something small or something big, choose something that will help you reset and gain a fresh outlook.

  • Small Self-Care Ideas
If you aren't able to leave your home, look for small opportunities to mentally escape. Reading a book, taking a long bath, listening to music or picking up a hobby are all ways to give your mind a break.

  • Medium Self-Care Ideas
If you are ready for something a bit bigger, try committing to a weekly exercise routine. You can include a mixture of physical exercises and meditations that will clear your mind.

If you aren't able to leave the house, search on YouTube or use YMCA360 from the comfort of your home.

  • Big Self-Care Ideas
If you are able, plan a day trip or a night away. You don't need to travel far to have a rejuvenating experience. In fact, you will likely rest easier knowing that you are close to home should an emergency arise. Luckily there are many destinations within 30-90 minutes.

Wherever you go, leave any guilt behind. You need this break to continue on your journey.
