Reflections on Five Days of Action

Child abuse is a complicated issue that impacts children all over the world. YGBW is committed to raising awareness of child abuse risk factors and common warning signs - to help educate caregivers in our community.
Recently one of our interns, Catey, joined with our Childcare team to take the Five Days of Action pledge. We caught up with Catey to understand what she learned during Five Days of Action.
Q: How did the Five Days of Action help you learn more about Child Abuse?
A: I now have a better awareness of the warning signals, risk factors and the vital role prevention plays in safeguarding children because of my educational journey here at YGBW.
Q: Did you learn anything surprising?
A: One of the most surprising things I have learned is how often child abuse goes unreported. Factors such as fear and lack of understanding lead to children not disclosing their experiences.
It is made considerably more challenging by the fact that abusers are frequently someone the child knows and trusts. I used to think that most abuse incidents were strangers, but now I understand that the great majority happen among people you know, including relatives, coaches or teachers. This information has opened my eyes and reaffirmed the importance of being watchful in any setting where children are present.
Q: What can be done about the problem?
A: Open communication and education are extremely important. Children who receive instruction on safe versus unsafe touch and personal boundaries are more likely to identify inappropriate behavior and speak up.
I also learned that it is the duty of adults to establish settings in which kids can voice their worries without worrying about repercussions or doubts. All adults, including parents, teachers and community members, have a responsibility to protect children.
Q: Is there anything else you'd like to share?
A: I learned during my time at the Y that prevention begins with awareness; Know, See, Respond. I'm going to be more proactive now that I know more about this topic. I plan to take steps to educate myself further, including starting my Darkness to Light training and any other opportunities I find here at the YMCA.
I will not think twice about reporting concerns to the right authorities or taking appropriate action if I ever suspect abuse. By raising awareness, acting and educating others, I hope to help make a safer environment for kids.
