Empowerment at Any Age

60 Birthday Celebration with Cake

As another year begins, we are reminded that another year has passed. It is common to become hyper-aware of the passage of time around New Year's Day and our birthdays.

Each year presents a choice - pine for days gone by or welcome another year as a new opportunity. Your friends at the Y encourage you to think of each year as a gift, a time to feel empowered regardless of age.

Think you are "too old" for empowerment? Think again! You are always the perfect age to seize the day. Try one of the suggestions below.

  1. Try a New Hobby
Is there a hobby that's been on your mind but you haven't taken the leap to try it? Make this the year that you finally get the courage to try something new.

We offer a variety of activities to try via ForeverWell programs - Art, Knitting, Gardening, Card Clubs, Field Trips and more. No matter where you go or what you do, commit to trying something new this year.

  2. Volunteer your Time
Sharing your time and talents with others is the ultimate way to feel empowered, knowing that you contributed positively to the community around you.

No matter your age or your abilities, there is a way for you to make an impact on those around you. At the Y, you can read to children in our Childcare & Early Learning programs, sign up to lead a ForeverWell program for you and your peers, volunteer as a youth sports coach - and more.

Outside of the Y, there are endless opportunities to support the work of local non-profit organizations or first responders (they have administrative volunteer roles).

Our best advice is to choose something that you are passionate about. You'll be grateful for the chance to make a difference.

  3. Be Mindful
While we can do things that make us feel empowered, the path to empowerment starts in our minds. If your head is cluttered with too many thoughts our you are weighed down by stress, it will be challenging to feel good.

Committing to a weekly mindfulness practice will help you clear your mind of the clutter and make room for peace and positivity. The Y offers a variety of Mind/Body classes to guide you on your journey. And YMCA360 includes a catalog of meditations and Mind/Body classes so that you can be mindful - no matter where you are.

  4. Move your Body
Gaining physical strength and mobility helps contribute to feelings of strength and empowerment.

No matter where you are on your journey, the Y offers a variety of options. From Aqua Fit classes to gentle and restorative classes to exercise classes designed for seniors - and more!

Regardless of how you choose to move your body, one thing is key. Keep all comparisons to yourself, staying focused on feeling better and stronger each month as compared to how you felt the prior month. Don't compare yourself to what others can do. It's all about becoming a stronger version of you!
