Avoid the Cold With These Three Great Indoor Workouts

So you’ve been slacking a little lately.

That’s ok, we all have. The temperature has been going up and down like crazy lately, which leaves us a little unsure of when it’s safe to take our workouts outside. Nobody wants to go for a run when it’s 15 degrees, but you don’t want to be missing out on time outside with the family when it’s 50 degrees and sunny, either.

Luckily, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine has you covered by taking your workouts inside until the weather figures itself out. There are so many great ways to stay active even if you’re trying to fend off frost, and here are three ways to get started!

Basketball

Now is the best time to work on your jumper and fine-tune that crossover. All of those short sprints and changes of direction add up quickly, and your body turns into a fat-burning machine when playing competitive basketball. That’s far from the only benefit, though. You’ll develop hand-eye coordination thanks to dribbling and shooting, you’ll sharpen your mental acumen by mentally processing the game and, most importantly, you’ll have fun!

From beginner to expert, from 5 to 85 years old, nobody’s too young or old to play basketball and stay warm! Head to your local YMCA of Greater Brandywine branch to start swishing those shots.

Swimming

There’s something incredibly therapeutic about going from wall to wall in the pool, hearing not much more than the sound of water splashing and blocking out the world. If laps aren’t your thing, there are water workouts that put your whole body to the task, and there’s almost zero strain on your joints and ligaments, unlike land workouts.

Do your kids want to get in and just splash around? Maybe they want to feel the thrill of shooting down a water slide and landing in the pool. Perhaps just playing with friends in the water is what they’re keen on. Either way, our indoor pools are definitely warmer than anything going on outside, so let’s go for a dip!

Group Exercise Classes

Working out on your own is great, but for many people, sweating alongside new and old friends is the way to go. There’s an almost never-ending list of group exercise classes to take at any of your local YMCA of Greater Brandywine branches, and it’s a great opportunity for everyone in the family because there’s something for somebody of any age.

Between dance, water, strength, cardio and mind and body classes, you can do something new every week without repeating yourself for a long time! Or, if you find a favorite, we can’t wait to see you come back for more.
