Goodie Bags for Children in Need

YMCA of Greater Brandywine community sponsor, Nemours, helps local families in West Chester, Pa

West Chester, PA (September 2020) – Families in the Greater West Chester area were the recipients of COVID-19 “goodie” bags as part of a partnership between Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children and the YMCA of Greater Brandywine.  This drive-up event, held at the Oscar Lasko YMCA and Childcare Center in the Borough of West Chester, wrapped up “Nemours Cares Week” on Saturday, August 22.

Nemours staff collected hundreds of items and then thoughtfully packed necessary personal items like hygiene products, food, masks, hand sanitizer and cleaning products into family sized tote bags.  Children also received a “goodie” bag that included toys, puzzles, and games.  To maintain safety protocol and social distancing measures, cars pulled up to the curbside at the branch to receive their bag from a group of volunteers that included both YMCA and Nemours staff.

“Volunteerism is important to us” says Michelle Shorter, Director of Community Engagement for Nemours Children’s Health. “We are always looking for opportunities for our employees to give back. It creates a deeper partnership.” Each year, Nemours employees go above and beyond not only for their patients and their families, but for our community. Annually through Nemours Cares, the healthcare system creates opportunities for their associates to go into the community and serve.

As a loyal community partner since 2015, Nemours has generously supported a number of key programs offered by the Y including: Power Scholars Academy, Healthy Kids Day, and “Safety Around Water” to name a few.  Nemours received the prestigious Community Partner of the Year award in 2019 from the YMCA of Greater Brandywine for their continued commitment to children’s physical and mental health.

Thank you to Nemours for continuing to support those in need inside and outside of your locations!
