Respite Recreation and Adaptive Programs at the Y

Woman works out with a coach at the Kennett Area YMCA

As the school season gets into full swing, children and families are getting back into after-school activities and sports. From Respite Care to Adaptive Gymnastics, we work to ensure that all members are given a chance to participate, grow and thrive - and we want to highlight the many ways that people with disabilities and their families can get involved in programs at the Y.

We recently caught up with Ellie, a YMCA member who participates in Adaptive Programs at the Kennett Area YMCA. Ellie wants to share her story so that other members can get involved in Adaptive Programs at the Y.

Ellie is 22 years old and initially started coming to the Kennett Area YMCA to participate in the Respite Recreation program. Through this program, the YMCA provides two hours of care for children and adults with developmental delays and disabilities so that their caregivers can enjoy a night out.

Respite Recreation includes tailored activities that are social, physical and fun. Ellie enjoyed attending Respite Recreation each month, meeting new peers and spending time with friends.

While at the Y, Ellie discovered that we offer so much more to persons with disabilities, so she joined the Y with a discounted membership thanks to the YMCA's Financial Assistance Program. YGBW welcomes all with special needs and works to find the best membership option for each individual. Please visit or call your local branch if you're interested in learning more -- we're here to assist you!

Ellie also signed up for one-on-one training sessions with coach Shemore Philip of EmpowerU Specialty Fitness. EmpowerU Specialty Fitness accepts waiver funding for services. After a thorough assessment, Ellie started a weekly exercise session using the treadmill, bike, rowing machine and various weight machines. Ellie also enjoys the Y's facilities with her Support Staff on days when she is not training with Shemore.

In addition to being active at the Y, Ellie plays TOPSoccer with the Delaware Football Club in Hockessin, DE and basketball with the Kennett and Unionville Buddy Basketball teams. She has graduated from Kennett Consolidated School system and is transitioning to adult services.

We are so happy to have Ellie as member of our Y community.
