Who is eligible:

  • Those who have joined YGBW by March 31, 2023 or sooner with an eligible membership type (see below) and consistently maintain their YGBW membership without interruption (meaning the membership is not on hold) through the outdoor pool season

  • Short-term memberships
  • OLY-Only Memberships
  • Any memberships that have been on hold for any period of time after March 31, 2023

NOTE: Please see the question below for Silver and Fit membership eligibility.

Which pools will be available for eligible members?

Eligible members may access all open outdoor pools across all branches of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine. While plans are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances, outdoor pools are expected to be open and available at the following YGBW branches:

  • Brandywine YMCA
  • Jennersville YMCA
  • West Chester Area YMCA
  • Upper Main Line YMCA

Why aren’t OLY-Only, Youth and Short-term memberships considered eligible?

OLY-Only members are already discounted and provide access to the Oscar Lasko YMCA only. However, OLY-Only members may pay the outdoor pool fee if they wish to use the outdoor pools at all YGBW locations or they can upgrade to any eligible YGBW membership type by March 31, 2023, to have the outdoor pools included in the cost of their membership.

Youth memberships are not included due to the required age limits for youth to be at the pool unaccompanied. We encourage the parents/guardians of youth with youth memberships to consider upgrading to any eligible YGBW family membership by March 31, 2023, to enjoy the outdoor pools together this summer.

Short-term memberships are not included due to the shortened length of the membership.

Are Silver Sneakers members eligible to have the outdoor pool included in their membership?

If you are a Silver Sneakers member and have joined YGBW by March 31, 2023, the outdoor pools are included in your membership. Those joining YGBW on April 1, 2023 or later, will need to pay the outdoor pool fee to access the pools.

Are Silver and Fit members eligible to have the outdoor pool included in their membership?

Yes, those with a Silver & Fit membership who are members as of March 31, 2023 will have access to the outdoor pools at all locations at no cost. Those joining on or after April 1, 2023 will need to pay the outdoor pool fees to access the pools.

Do Renew Active and One Pass members have to pay for outdoor pool memberships?

If you are a Renew Active or One Pass member and you have joined YGBW by March 31, 2023, the outdoor pools are included in your membership. Those joining YGBW on April 1, 2023 or later, will need to pay the outdoor pool fee to access the pools.

Do those with a Health Plan Partners (HPP) membership have to pay for outdoor pool memberships?

If you have a Health Plan Partners membership, are 18 or older and have joined YGBW by March 31, 2023, the outdoor pools are included in your membership. Those joining YGBW on April 1, 2023 or later, will need to pay the outdoor pool fee to access the pools.

If my YGBW membership is on hold, but I’ve had it since 3/31/23, am I eligible to have the pool included at no additional cost?

No. You must consistently maintain an active membership without interruption from March 31, 2023, through the outdoor pool season to be eligible to have the outdoor pool included in your membership at no additional cost. If your membership was on hold after March 31, 2023, and you want to use the outdoor pools, you will need to reactivate your membership and pay the outdoor pool fee to access the outdoor pools.

What if I’m an 18-year old youth member who is grandfathered in prior to the age range of youth memberships changing?

If you will be 18 by the outdoor pool opening date and have consistently maintained an active YGBW youth membership since at least December 31, 2022, you are eligible to have the outdoor pool included in your membership.

As a YGBW staff member, am I eligible for the outdoor pool?

Absolutely! All YGBW staff members have the outdoor pools included in their membership at no additional cost. Join our team today!

Can non-members or those who have recently canceled their membership purchase an outdoor pool membership?

You must be an active member and hold an eligible membership at the YMCA of Greater Brandywine to purchase an outdoor pool membership. The outdoor pools are included at no additional cost for those who joined YGBW with an eligible membership prior to March 31, 2023, and consistently maintain their membership. If you join or restart your membership after April 1, 2023, you will need to pay the cost for the outdoor pools - in addition to your monthly YGBW membership fees.

Is early bird pricing available this year?

Because the outdoor pool is included in the cost of a YGBW membership so long as the membership was started by March 31, 2023, early bird pricing is not available on outdoor pool fees.

Is financial assistance available for an outdoor pool membership?

If you are purchasing a pool membership because you were not a YGBW member prior to March 31, 2023, a standard 10% discount for approved income-based memberships is available. Note that the primary member for the outdoor pool must be the same primary member as the indoor membership. Visit the member services desk in your local branch for information.

Are payment plans available for the outdoor pool membership?

Payment plans are not available for outdoor pool memberships this year. Those purchasing outdoor pool memberships will be doing so in April and May, when the pool opens so there is not enough time to create a payment plan.

Pool Access

If I’m an eligible member by March 31, 2023, do I need to do anything to use the outdoor pool?

Yes, you will need to register for outdoor pool access at your local branch (watch for information in 2023), but there will not be an additional cost. We will notify everyone when you are able to register. Registering at your local branch will provide you with access to outdoor pools at all branches of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine.

Outdoor Pool Information

Are the outdoor pools at the Kennett Area YMCA and Lionville Community YMCA opening in 2023?

  • Kennett Area YMCA: This year, the outdoor pool at the Kennett Area YMCA will be open for summer camp and swim team use only. Eligible members of all YGBW branches (see question above Who is eligible to have the outdoor pools included in the cost of their YGBW membership in 2023?), including the Kennett Area YMCA, may use the outdoor pools at any of our other YGBW locations.

  • Lionville Community YMCA: The Lionville Community YMCA outdoor pool will not be opening, as it requires significant and costly repairs that would impede its use over the next two years. This, in combination with drops in usage (before and after COVID closures) and rising challenges in staffing, has led us to reimagine the outdoor pool area at the Lionville Community YMCA. This was a very difficult decision, but we are looking forward to reimagining the outdoor space into a multi-use space that will benefit our community through many seasons to come.

Eligible members (see question above 'Who is eligible to have the outdoor pools included in the cost of their YGBW membership in 2023?'), of all YGBW branches, including the Lionville Community YMCA, may use the outdoor pools at any of our YGBW locations.

Policies

Can youth use the outdoor pool without a parent or guardian present?

To ensure we provide the safest environment possible, youth 15 and under must have a parent/guardian present with them at all times while at the outdoor pool. (Note: The youth and parent/guardian must both have the appropriate and eligible membership to visit the outdoor pool.) Youth who are on an eligible YGBW family membership need to be 16 or older to visit the outdoor pool by themselves.

What are the hours for the outdoor pools?

Unless otherwise noted, the outdoor pool season runs from the Saturday before Memorial Day (May 27) until Labor Day (Sept 4). This is subject to change and we may need to close the outdoor pools due to inclement weather including rain and cold weather.

  • Guest passes (members who bring a guest with them) are not available for the Upper Main Line YMCA's 50M pool due to limited space.
  • Guest passes are available for YGBW Members to bring guests to the following so long as space permits:
    • Upper Main Line YMCA Borst Pool and West Chester Area YMCA Waterpark: $25 per guest per day for those over two years of age. Please note that guests are not permitted in the 50M pool at the Upper Main Line YMCA due to limited space.
    • Brandywine and Jennersville YMCAs: $10 per guest per day for those over two years of age.

Health & Safety

What health and safety protocols have been implemented as a result of COVID-19?

Our highest priority is always protecting the health and safety of everyone at the YMCA. We have implemented procedures and protocols based on the latest directives and recommendations provided by the CDC, the Chester County Health Department, American Academy of Pediatrics and the State of Pennsylvania. Masking is not required.

Lap Swimming & Swim Teams

Will lap swimming be available?

We hope to offer lap swimming for those 12 and over. Schedules will vary by branch and may not always be available at every branch. Schedules will be posted online as the season gets closer. Note that those under 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian, unless they are on a YGBW swim team, when using the outdoor pool.

Are there any exceptions to the 12 and over rule for lap swimming?

Unfortunately, there is not at this time. Lap swimmers must be 12 or older. We will be monitoring pool usage and will consider expanding the age range later in the summer if possible.

Will swim teams have access to the Upper Main Line YMCA’s 50M pool and thus limit availability?

At somewhat regular times throughout the spring, summer and early fall, the pool will be closed to members for swim team practices, meets and other activities. You can always check our online schedule to see what is available.

Do I have to reserve lanes when using UMLY’s 50M pool?

No, lane reservations are not required.
